Having just read Rooney’s newest book, Normal People, I was having major withdrawals so decided to continue my obsession with my new favourite author by reading Rooney’s first book, Conversations with Friends. I devoured it in a day! Another superb read.
Meet Frances, a twenty-one year old college student who lives with her best-friend and ex-girlfriend, Bobbi. Frances is your typical insecure protagonist, channeling anger an indifference to come across as cool and intelligent. When she meets Nick, a swoony thirty-two year old actor who’s married to Melissa, she can’t help but be attracted to him. They start an affair, but both character’s insecurities get in the way, not to mention Nick’s relationship status. As the story progresses, you hope they can work it out but like most martial affairs, things get complicated and at one point you wonder if Frances was doing all of this just to make Bobbi jealous. It’s another great ready by Rooney, albeit a tad bit to introspective for my liking, but worth it for the witty and relatable prose that Rooney is exceptional at creating.
