I somehow came across this book online, but only now realise that it was released in 2010. It was a moving story of a daughter’s plight to repair her relationship with her abusive alcoholic father. It spans several decades as we watch Daley witness her father’s decline throughout the years, starting when she’s eleven when her parents are on the verge of divorce. We see how Daley grows up between the chaos of two households and how that molds her into the young woman who tries to save her father from alcohol. The story hits home as King subtly shows the ways alcohol destroys the entire family system. You can’t help but cringe and cheer for Daley as she sets out on her hopeless quest. I’ve read several of King’s books, including Euphoria (twice), which is set in PNG during the 1930s, and believe Father of the Rain to be some of her best work. Highly Recommend.
