Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams

This was our October pick for book club, a mostly light read about race and sexuality in modern day London. Queenie, a twenty-something woman of Jamaican descent is on the oust with her boyfriend of three years, Tom. They decide to take a break and Queenie moves out, beginning her self-destructive quest to fill the void left by Tom. She goes on a series of bad dates, choosing (white) toxic men who only want to have sex with her to try and fill some fantasy of fucking a black woman. The men are rough and dismissive of Queenie’s feelings, leading her down a troublesome rabbit hole that forces her to address the abuse she suffered from her mother and step-father as a child. I enjoyed the premise of the story, finding it an easy read, but did find it dragged on a bit towards the middle/end as we saw the same repetitive bad behaviour over and over again.
