When Life Gives You LuluLemons by Lauren Weisberger

lemonsI hate that I get embarrassed when I read chic-lit, (as if it’s beneath me, when really it’s not because I’ve enjoyed most chic-lit books I’ve read). All books have their place in this world, and chic-lit is just as important (and far easier to read) than some of the dribble that literary greats have produced. It allows you to escape to a fun, flirty world, where the biggest concern is whether your Louboutins match your Lanvin.

When Life Gives You LuluLemons is exactly what I needed after some of the troubling books and things I’ve seen on the news lately, not to mention the torture-porn of watching season two of The Handmaids Tale in the evening. It’s sort of sequel to The Devil Wears Prada (which I loved, hence the reason for reading this book), but follows the life of Emily Blunt’s vivacious character Emily Charlton, as she navigates a failing career and temporary move to Greenwich, Connecticut.

Supported by two other main characters, ex-super model Karolina Hartwell and lost ex-lawyer, turned house-wife Miriam, we learn about the fabulous world of America’s richest suburb (who knew vagina surgery, where you actually tighten your vagina to fit your husband’s penis was a real thing!).

No, there isn’t a lot of substance to this book, but it’s a light, quick read that will give you a few laughs. As a writer, I think it’s important to read a range of genres to see how other authors tackle things. Lauren Weisberger does a great job at chic-lit, giving you a glimpse  of the hilarities of this other world.
